On Saturday, April 13, 2013 the Macular Degeneration Association(MDA)will host a unique awareness program in Philadelphia, PA. The event is designed to give an overview of age-related macular degeneration(AMD), including the progression of the disease and the dangers of vision loss as a result. The symposium will also cover precautionary methods that may delay the onset of AMD and reduce retinal damage.
Event attendees will learn the latest treatment advances evolving in the macular field. In addition you will hear from a patient that has macular degeneration, their journey and tips on handling this disease.
Exhibitors and featured event speakers will offer participants many opportunities to learn about the latest advances in macular degeneration research, precautionary methods,medications, treatments, and low vision therapies.
MDA’s awareness program in Philadelphia will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to interact with macular experts, local doctors, fellow patients and caregivers in an open forum.
Registration starts at 8:00 am with Exhibitions. The lectures will begin promptly at 8:30 am. Mid morning refreshments will be provided. At the end of the program you will be able to participate in question and answer session.

Hugo M. Linares, D.O. Hugo M. Linares, D.O., graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey with a bachelor of science in biological sciences. He received his medical degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Linares completed his internship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, New Jersey. He performed his residency in ophthalmology at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he was chief resident in his final year.

Tricia Stefankiewicz, MA, RD CNSC LDNTricia Stefankiewicz is a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She also received certification as a Clinical Nutrition Support Clinician specializing in the unique nutritional needs of the inpatient cardiology, cardiac surgery, and urology populations. Ms. Stefankiewicz has a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from West Chester University and a Master’s Degree in Nutrition Education from Immaculata University. In addition to working in an intensive care inpatient setting, she teaches weight maintenance classes at the Albert J. Stunkard Weight Management Program of Penn Medicine. |

Janet DeBerry Steinberg, OD, FAAODr. Steinberg has been in the field of low vision rehabilitation for over 20 years. She specializes in helping visually impaired patients achieve goals in performing tasks of daily living. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Steinberg can recommend a variety of visual aids and techniques to allow the patient to get the most out of his or her remaining vision. She also sees patients in need of routine eye exams and refractions for glasses and/or contact lens.

Joshua M. Greene, MD, FAAODr. Greene’s lifelong fascination with the visual process and how it works is what led him to the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Greene decided to focus exclusively on retinal surgery because he’s always enjoyed working with his hands, and this ophthalmic specialty requires a great deal of precision and technical skill. Dr. Greene is a board certified Ophthalmologist and member of American Academy of Ophthalmology. The former director of the Department of Vitreoretinal Surgery, VA Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Greene is a Clinical Associate at the Scheie Eye Institute, where he teaches other eye doctors.

Macular Degeneration Association
The Macular Degeneration Association is a nonprofit health organization providing macular research, information and advocacy. MDA is an IRS recognized 501(c)3 organization and contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
The mission of the organization is to cure macular degeneration and to improve the lives of all people affected by the disease.
To fulfill this mission, the MDA will fund research, publish scientific findings, provide funding for education, information and other services to people with macular degeneration, their families, healthcare professionals and the public. The foundation advocates for the increase in funding for scientific research and for the rights of people with macular degeneration.
The money raised by the foundation funds research,education, information programs and advocacy and awareness efforts that will support the over 9.1 million people with macular degeneration in communities across America.
